Omaha Hi/Lo is a split pot game. That means there can be two winners if there is a qualifying low hand. The Player with the highest hand will split the pot with a player with the lowest hand. Players dealt four 'hole' cards that only they can see, and five 'community' cards on the board that everyone can see and use. Each player must use two of their hole cards, as well as three of the community cards, to make their 5 best hi hand and 5 best low hand. In order to have a hand qualify as “low” there must be no cards higher than 8 in your five card hand. If there is no qualifying “low” hand the winner with the highest poker hand will win.
- Ace can be used as either low or high. Flush or Straight can disregard when making a low hand. As a result the lowest hand is A 2 3 4 5. The most confusing part of Omaha Hi/Lo is determining the best low hand. Furthermore, it is important to remember that the low hands are counted from the top to down.
- Since you will dealt four (4) cards you can able to use any combination of two for a high hand and two for a low hand. The best starting hand consist of A,2,K and (x) whatever card it is. A and 2 will give you a chance to hit a best low hand and A and K will give you high hand like straight (AKQJ10) or top pairs, it would be nice if you have double suited in your hand too.
- To start a new hand, two 'Blind' bets are put up or 'Posted' at the table. After the blinds are posted each player is dealt four cards face down with the player on the small blind receiving the first card and the player with the dealer button getting the last card.
- The first betting round begins with the player to the left of the big blind either putting an equal bet of a big blind means “call”, putting twice as bet of a big blind or more, means “raise” or folding his hand. The betting goes around the table in order until it reaches the player who posted the small blind.
- The Flop – The dealer lays out first three community cards in the center of the table.
- Another betting round begins with the first active player to the left of the dealer button.
- The Turn – A fourth card is dealt face up in the middle of the table.
- Another betting round begins with the first active player to the left of the dealer button.
- The River – A fifth and final card is dealt face up in the middle of the table.
- Final betting round begins with the first active players to the left of the dealer button.
- To determine the winner, the player MUST use two cards and three cards from the “board” to form the five highest poker hand and five lowest hand. If two different players have a low and high hand they will split the pot.
- A player with 7432A (an 7 low) would lose to a player with 65432 (a 6 low). This surprises most players who instinctively think that 8432A wins due to the ace as the lowest card.
