Dou Di Zhu (斗地主) is a very popular 2 VS 1 card game in China, which means fighting the land lord or the land owner. This is probably a phrase used by people during the Cultural Revolution when the communists went to against the land owners.
- The game is played with 52 card decks with Jokers, strictly for 3 players.
- Each player is dealt 17 cards and 3 cards are dealt face down in the middle of the table.
- The bidding round start and decide which player want to be the landlord. Highest bidder becomes the landlord, then the 3 community cards will face up for everyone to see and it will add to the landlord’s hand and the other 2 players (farmer) will have to play against the landlord.
- The landlord opens the game with any card set.
- Each farmer in turn can play a higher card set or passes.
- Once the card set is played and the other 2 players pass, the “winner” of that card set has won the right to in charge the next card combination to be discarded.
- The first player to discard all his card is the winner.
- In Dou Di Zhu, It doesn’t matter how many cards you have in your hand if you lose because you will not be penalised more or less based on the number of your unplayed cards. It requires planning on how to get rid of all your cards.
- If you find your hand looks bleak, then you might try to help your partner win (assume you are not the landlord).
- If the landlord win, both farmer pay but If EITHER ONE of the farmers wins, the landlord will pay BOTH farmers the amount of the bet.
- The 2 farmer have to cooperate to fight the landlord. Hence the name of the game.
